Highway Design

Detailed planning for safe roadways.

Flexible Pavement Design for Low-Volume Rural Road

  • Designed a flexible pavement system using Austroads mechanistic-empirical design methodology

  • Analysed traffic loading (ESA), subgrade strength (CBR), and drainage conditions

  • Proposed layered pavement composition including sub-base, basecourse, and chip seal surfacing

  • Optimised pavement thickness to achieve cost-effective design with improved resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking

Traffic Engineering Analysis of Urban Signalised Intersection

  • Conducted traffic volume surveys and peak-hour flow analysis for a multi-leg urban intersection

  • Assessed Level of Service (LOS), delays, and queue lengths using traffic engineering principles and SIDRA-based approach

  • Developed solutions including signal timing optimisation, lane reconfiguration, and dedicated turning phases

  • Achieved improved intersection efficiency and reduced congestion during peak periods

Contract Management Study – Road Maintenance (NZS 3910)

  • Evaluated road maintenance contract framework based on NZS 3910

  • Analysed contractor obligations, risk allocation, and KPI-based performance measures in a NZ context

  • Prepared a risk register covering cost overruns, delays, and service level compliance

  • Proposed monitoring and reporting mechanisms to improve contractor accountability and cost control

  • Geometric Design of Rural State Highway Intersection

  • Designed rural intersection improvements using Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Austroads guidelines

  • Performed sight distance and heavy vehicle turning path analysis (WB-20)

  • Proposed turn bays and geometric upgrades to improve safety and traffic flow
